The Valley.....

val·ley (valē)

noun pl. valleys -·leys

1. A stretch of low land lying between hills or mountains and usually having a river or stream flowing through it

2. The land drained or watered by a great river system

3. Any long dip or hollow, as the trough of a wave

4. The trough formed where two slopes of a roof meet, or where the roof meets a wall

I have chosen Fitzroy Falls as the landscape in which to base my bridge. Fitzroy Falls is located about an hour and a half outside Sydney in the Southern Highlands. There is a lovely bushwalking trail and look out spot.

Note: I actually ended up loosing this valley. But The new one is very similar.

The Final Product

Images
Below are three images, capturing the lanscape of my island and the two seperate labratory structures.

This image captures Darwin's labratory, which is located on the right side of the island at the base of a steep incline. The building, as discussed, before is intentionally surrounded by dense folage given Darwin's field of biology. Through the mutliple levels, derived from the arrangement of the 5 prisms varying view points are provided for Darwin to study his natural surroundings.

The environment surrounding Kuepper's lab is quite barron. This is to maximise the sun's rays that will hit the building. As previously mentioned, it is the internal structure of this buildings that is most interesting (see earlier post of section) as each space defines that which is inside it.

I created my first world! :)

I split my labratories into sperate components to be able to import them into Crysis, as seen below.
After importing my labratory into the environment I build up three morphing ramps for the rears entries to the three elements of Darwin's lab. I found this quite challenging. I then started to accumulate the density of the forest that I wanted to surround Darwin's labratory using a variety of folage.

I wanted the meeting place for the two scientists to be peacful and natural. I constructed a lagoon and a flat park area for them to meet in. Darwin's path wraps around the lagoon. The path then extends through the meeting place to a ramp that bends around the mountain to Kuepper's labratory positioned on the peak.

Ultimately, I cut down the extra land to make some more dramatic cliffs. This represents the differnt time periods in which these two scientists worked.

the labratory evolves from the ground up

After careful consideration of my original idea and the environment it would exist in, I decided that I could make a more interesting site if the two labratories where seperate but linked by the terrain.
I first developed Darwin's labratory, comprised of 5 prisms as marked in the image below. The key element of this design is that once in the custom designed landscape, it will appear as though it is morphing out of the ground from the two vertical prisms. The three horizontal prisms, in particular the outer two are designed to immerse Darwin and his collegues within the jungle that will surround it. Providing them with a multitude of different view points upon which they can approach their subject matter.
The design for Kuepper's labratory was inspired by a solar cell and comprises of 4 prisms. The structure itself is very cellular in that spaces are defined by those spaces around them. The height of each room decrease within the series. The centeral office is intened for Kuepper herself and the surrounding areas as space for her experiments, as is depicted in the section below.

I selected the first texture for it's biological feel. It is intended to symbolise a variety of organic cells blended together. I contrasted this bright texture with black in the final design, so that the building would not be too overpowering.

The second texture covers that roof of Kuepper's labratory. It is a series of solar cells, clearly inspired by her branch of science. The third is of a similar vein. I also, experimented with using the fourth texture in place of the third as I thought it was quite symbolic of the radiating energy of the sun. However, once applied to the model it appeared like leopard print and quite overpowering.
